Premise
Before starting, please note that
i) if you experience problems with your domain not working, then you might need to contact the CloudFlare support first
ii) custom domains must be uniquely assigned to JotUrl.
In fact a domain cannot be used for both your website and your tracking links. The main reason for this is that you need to change the DNS records of your domain and have them point to JotUrl. This is a technical requirement, which is independent of JotUrl.
However, you can still use a third-level domain (e.g., on.domain.ext), in this case domain.ext can be used for your website, while on.domain.ext is used for your tracking links.
(Wondering what is the difference between domain, subdomain and third level domain? Read this article first --> https://joturl.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360026241411)
That said, if you have a domain on CloudFlare and want to couple it with JotUrl to create your branded links, then you need to reconfigure your DNS settings, in order to point the domain/subdomain at JotUrl servers.
Please follow the few steps below, to setup your domain in CloudFlare:
-
Click on your domain name.
-
On the domain Details page, click on DNS:
- The DNS management page will open
-
if you want to configure a domain (e.g., domain.ext), please follow these steps:
- Select A Record from the drop-down menu, enter @ in the Name text box and enter JotUrl's IP address
65.52.146.52
in the IPv4 address text box. Make sure to see the Orange Cloud icon next to Add record. Click on Add record. - Select A Record from the drop-down menu, enter www in the Name text box and enter JotUrl's IP address
65.52.146.52
in the IPv4 address text box. Make sure to see the Orange Cloud icon next to Add record. Click on Add record. - If present, remove all records AAAA (IPv6) for @, www
- Select A Record from the drop-down menu, enter @ in the Name text box and enter JotUrl's IP address
-
If you want to configure a subdomain/third-level domain (e.g., go.domain.ext), please follow these steps:
- Select CNAME Record from the drop-down menu, enter your subdomain without the root domain (e.g., if your subdomain is go.domain.ext, you have to enter go, if your subdomain is go.test.domain.ext, you have to enter go.test) in the Name text box and enter
cd.joturl.com
in the Domain name text box. Make sure to see the Orange Cloud icon next to Add record. Click on Add record.
- Select CNAME Record from the drop-down menu, enter your subdomain without the root domain (e.g., if your subdomain is go.domain.ext, you have to enter go, if your subdomain is go.test.domain.ext, you have to enter go.test) in the Name text box and enter
- WARNING - READ THIS CAREFULLY: Once you add your domain within the JotUrl dashboard, using the "ADD NEW DOMAIN" dialog, please click on "advanced options" and make sure to check "Do not perform security checks and add the domain anyway". Also, leave the "Force an HTTPS connection for this domain [...]" option unchecked (in fact you cannot enable it because your custom domain is managed by CloudFlare and this may cause infinite loops - you will find a similar function on the Crypto page of your domain on CloudFlare).
- WARNING - READ THIS CAREFULLY: if you want to use your domain with the HTTPS secure protocol, you need to install an SSL certificate on the JotUrl dashboard following this article since CloudFlare must establish a secure connection with our servers.
